How we calculate
This is a planning range, not a quote. Prices vary a lot by region and by month.
- Shed shell (framing, floor, siding, roof deck, shingles and a door): our planning range of $15–$28 per square foot of floor. We set it inside the $10–$30 per square foot that HomeGuide reports for prefab sheds and kits, since a basic shed you build uses similar materials.
- Metal roofing: adds $3–$8 per square foot of roof over asphalt. Bob Vila lists asphalt shingles around $2.10 and metal at $5–$20 per square foot; we used the lower part because you install it yourself.
- Foundation: gravel pad $4–$10 per square foot (Angi); concrete slab $5–$10 per square foot (HomeGuide); blocks or skids $1.50–$3.50 per square foot, our estimate for treated skids and concrete blocks.
- Prefab, installed: $10–$30 per square foot (HomeGuide), shown so you can compare building with buying.
- Permit: $50–$145 where required. Sheds under 200 square feet often don't need one (HomeGuide), but rules are local: call your building department.
Not included: tools, paint, windows, electrical work, delivery, tax and site prep beyond the foundation.
