Free vs paid woodworking plans

Free plans are often enough. Here is when paying makes sense.

When a free plan is enough

  • The project is common: a bookshelf, a workbench, a planter.
  • You only need one plan.
  • You are comfortable filling gaps, like working out your own cut list.

When paying can be worth it

  • You want consistent drawings, cut lists and materials lists across many projects.
  • You need a plan sized to your exact space, such as a shed.
  • You value your search time more than the price.

How to judge a paid plan pack

  • Look for a free sample and check it is clear to you.
  • Ignore countdown timers and “regular price” anchors.
  • Check the refund window and who handles it.
  • Be skeptical of exact plan counts and customer numbers with no source.
